Guide To Your Venetian Mirror


Mirrors are something that everyone has in their home. Wether you use your mirror in the bathroom only, or for decorating purposes, you are going to find that there are many makes and styles to choose from. Knowing and understanding venetian mirror will help.

There's nothing quite as beautiful as a Venetian Mirror. And the history of Venetian mirrors can be traced back to the early 16th century.

In the early 16th century the Venetians perfected metal backed glass. Back to the beginning mirrors were used purely for functional purposes. More than used for viewing they were used as a form of illumination. Mirrors were combined with candles to provide a brighter illumination than just the candles would provide.

1. Cut And Etched Glass Mirrors

Etching was a very popular method of decorating glass in the late 18th centuries. Windows, stemware, and mirrors were often etched. Etching was done by immersing the cut glass in an acid bath. The parts of the glass that weren't going to be decorated were covered with rosin and beeswax which is called resist. Then when the exposed parts are immersed into the acid the pattern is revealed.

This provides a beautiful finished piece! Some etching still appears today but much of it come from previous eras. Etched and cut glass mirrors look great in any dcor whether modern or traditional.

2. Freestanding Mirrors

During the early 18th century freestanding dressing table mirrors and cheval mirrors were very popular in dressing rooms and bedrooms. Generally they were set in sturdy but simple wood. Over time the decorations become more ornate being topped with the Rococo style.

Of course there are modern freestanding mirrors available but finding one of the originals to add to your room is a real treasure! Don't pass it by if you are so lucky....
